- Frederick William Horsup
He was born on 5th December 1872 in Ipswich England, the son of Thomas William and Hannah Maria Horsup (nee Goddard). He was the tenth of eleven children, six girls and five boys. Records show that three girls and one boy died within their first year (which suggests at birth), not an unusual occurrence in those times.
Frederick, together with his elder brother Henry Albert, immigrated to Bathurst, Australia. Henry later returned to England while Frederick in due course came to New Zealand. He became a butcher by trade and despite his involvement in his church the belief exists that he possibly had a problem with alcohol.
