Now, what events can be established as having happened during our grandparents 28 years together? Following their wedding at which time the marriage certificate records Frederick as being a porter, the 1900 electoral roll records him as being a butcher, so it is apparent that it was during this period that he served his time and acquired his qualification.
Of particular interest was Frederick’s involvement with the Primitive Methodist Church, something previously unknown to us. As early as age 25 he was a practising lay preacher/reader and in that capacity, based in Inglewood, he served a territory that covered at least 10 outlying centres. Perhaps the Marshall Family bible played a part in this activity.
Travel throughout his territory would have been by horse and gig or even on horseback. Newspaper advertisements in the Taranaki Herald at the time provide an idea of the sort of schedule Frederick kept while preaching around the roads of north Taranaki.

Ada Sarah MARSHALL, b. 18 Jun 1870, New Plymouth , d. 15Mar1954, New Plymouth (Age 83 years) |
Married |
25 Apr 1895 |
Inglewood |
- In her early twenties Ada visited Australia and in Melbourne met up with Frederick Horsup who proposed. She accepted subject to them moving to New Zealand.
This materialised and they where married at the residence of Ada's parents - Samual and Sarah Marshall in Inglewood.
- Frederick William Horsup
He was born on 5th December 1872 in Ipswich England, the son of Thomas William and Hannah Maria Horsup (nee Goddard). He was the tenth of eleven children, six girls and five boys. Records show that three girls and one boy died within their first year (which suggests at birth), not an unusual occurrence in those times.
Frederick, together with his elder brother Henry Albert, immigrated to Bathurst, Australia. Henry later returned to England while Frederick in due course came to New Zealand. He became a butcher by trade and despite his involvement in his church the belief exists that he possibly had a problem with alcohol.
