IDEAS:

-- Two Flower THOMASs were born at about the same time in Corston parish, but this is the correct one with the correct parents because she is listed as being a widow, Flower SALMON, and living with one of her sisters, Mary THOMAS (unmarried), in the 1851 Census for Corston. In the other SALMON family, I found no Mary as a sister. In addition, the other Flower THOMAS would have only been 16 when her first child was christened, which is not as likely as this one, who would have been 25.

CONFLICT (minor):

-- Interestingly, Mary's age in the 1851 census is reported as either 51 or 56, putting her actual age off by either 14 years or nine years (her birth year is 1786).

COINCIDENCE (possibly need to merge another family with this one):

-- A Flower THOMAS in the misc PAF file has a husband, Mr. SALMON, and three kids, all about the same ages and same names as ours, so it could be that these are the same people, that those belong to us or vice-versa - probably more likely that they belong to us. The child of the other Flower SALMON is a Mason. The husband of this one is a Mason, so it is perhaps a bit more likely that it is ours (although, it is possible that the trade goes all through the family). However, I think it is too much of a coincidance that the other Flower married a SALMON and had kids born with the same names and at the same time as our Flower.

IDEAS:

-- No other John SALMON was listed as christened in the Corston parish records within 20 years either side of this person, so, although not connected for a 100% certainty with record of a headstone (i.e., with other relatives buried with him), it seems fairly certain this is the person.

22 For the record, Florence Nancy Horsup was born in Napier on 13 May 1919, the daughter of 26 year old Olive Dyer of Pahiatua. She subsequently married a James R Walch.

It will be noted that nine months elapsed between Florence’s birth and official adoption and a belief exists that in some way after birth she came into the care of Ada and Frederick on a supposedly temporary basis but after a period of time a decision was made to formally adopt her.

Frederick and Ada’s older grandchildren were not aware of this situation until much later in their lives and to them she has always been their Auntie Florrie.
HORSUP, Florence Nancy (I813)

23 Frederick William Horsup
He was born on 5th December 1872 in Ipswich England, the son of Thomas William and Hannah Maria Horsup (nee Goddard). He was the tenth of eleven children, six girls and five boys. Records show that three girls and one boy died within their first year (which suggests at birth), not an unusual occurrence in those times.

Frederick, together with his elder brother Henry Albert, immigrated to Bathurst, Australia. Henry later returned to England while Frederick in due course came to New Zealand. He became a butcher by trade and despite his involvement in his church the belief exists that he possibly had a problem with alcohol.
